According to recent information Adnams continues with its enterprising green policy. I am not going to make a snide comment that maybe it was about time that things moved in this direction in Britain, a country which barely knows (though the citizens do understand) the technique of recycling household waste. Each country has its own blind spot in such matters.
However it is an interesting posting for a website which has its head office in what many people consider the Mecca of beers, namely Bavaria.
A brewer has launched what it claims is the UK's first carbon-neutral beer at a cost of less than 1p worth of carbon emissions per bottle and Adnams, the brewers, have pledged to offset this with the environmental organisation ‘Climate Care’.
The beer is produced at a new 'eco-friendly' brewery in Southwold, Suffolk, which recycles steam created during the brewing process using it to heat 90% of the following brew. The high-yielding barley is grown in East Anglia, thereby reducing transport costs and emissions, whilst the Boadicea hops are resistant to aphids, allowing the reduction in pesticides.
The beer will be packaged in a lightweight 500ml glass bottle which the company claims has reduced its carbon emissions by more than 415 tonnes a year.
The group said it worked with experts in carbon reduction from the University of East Anglia to develop the beer. The university’s programme helped the company to understand the background and far-reaching effects of carbon emission thereby helping them to pinpoint key areas where they could make savings.
Adnams’ new distribution centre was also designed along these principles and although the initial building costs were 15% higher than a normal metal warehouse they reckon that they will be saving more than they spent in the very near future. With the price of energy going up the company can sit placently assured that there will be daylight and temperature changes along with rain. These all interact to heat the water, keep temperatures pleasant and cleanse wastage biologically.
Adnams, a company making future sense.
